Marriage Proposal at The End of the World – Kailua Kona, Hawaii
It was Scott and Paris’s first trip to The Big Island (Hawaii Island). Since it was Scott’s birthday, he told Paris that he wanted to check out End of the World, a popular cliff diving spot in Kailua Kona. Paris had no idea that not only would they be cliff diving, but they would be “taking the plunge” into their new life together.
Scott planned every detail to ensure the proposal would be a surprise. They stopped for a nice lunch before arriving so that they would both be nicely dressed. I came early with my dear friend Kelli, who asked to help video the surprise proposal. We scouted out the perfect location near the cliff. Scott was instructed to follow behind Kelli, who was poised as a random tourist with a camera. I quickly followed behind the couple capturing a few shots as they walked to cliffs.
Upon arriving at the surprise destination, Scott gave me the signal that it was time by asking Paris to capture a panorama with her cell phone and kneeling down to pretend to tie his shoes so that he could grab the engagement ring. The only problem was an actual tourist at the location struck up a conversation with Paris. Scott quickly put the ring behind his back while Kelli and I were pretending to be photographing something else.
Once Scott was able to regain Paris’s attention he sweetly bent to his knee and pulled out the ring. Paris was surprised, excited, and emotional. Needless to say, she said “YES.”
I adorned them with Hawaiian Leis (a symbol of affection), and we celebrated with a little champagne and a toast. I brought chalkboards that read “She said yes” & “So we’re taking the plunge together.” Scott and Paris held hands and jumped from The End of The World into their new lives together.
I discovered that Paris has a fascination for astronomy so I took them to the summit of Mauna Kea to watch the sunset and a little stargazing. The conditions were perfect and the view was spectacular. We were even able to capture the Milky-Way and distant glow from Kilauea’s eruption.
This beautiful couple went from the End of the World to the Top of the World to the rest of their lives. I’m so honored to have been a part of their engagement.
