50th Anniversary Sunset Beach Portrait Session
Bob and Liz were celebrating their 50th anniversary and wanted to mark the occasion with a sunset beach portrait session. They were staying at Kona Alii in a vacation rental and noticed my studio. We met the following day for a consultation. It was very apparent how much they loved each other and enjoyed spending time together. It is was not their first trip to Hawaii. They had been to Kona many times before, even stayed previously at Kona Alii. It will certainly not be their last visit to Hawaii. In fact, like most people who come here, the thought of moving here or purchasing a vacation home seemed like a possibility they often consider.
The happy couple booked a 30-minute sunset portrait session at Old Kona Airport Beach. It’s one of my favorite local beaches to photograph. It’s convenient, very diverse, and rarely crowded. We met at my studio before the session so we could drive to the beach together. They arrived with two pieces of paper one said “She’s Perfect” and the other “He’s Patient” that they wanted to incorporate into the shoot. I loved that idea and just happened to have a few small chalkboards and chalk that we used instead. They explained that that’s what they told people when they asked for their secret to their successful marriage.
After arriving at Old Kona Airport Beach, we found a smooth patch of lava with some small tide pools that worked perfectly for our sunset photo shoot. Bob and Liz wore beautiful Hawaiian plumeria leis that handmade just for them. I asked if they could remove the leis and place them on the rocks in the shape of a heart. I placed the couple in the background with the leis in my foreground for a selective focus image. The session ended in a gorgeous Kona sunset and some lovely photos of this adorable happy couple.
